The purpose of this portfolio is to showcase various elements of nursing leadership and nursing education expertise. Whether from a communication plan, to facilitating groups, to proceeding through an accreditation self-study program, there are multiple examples in this portfolio to exhibit a range of tools. Joy McIlvaine, MS, RN, NPD-BC, ANP-BC, L.Ac. has a proven record of leadership capabilities through a history of multiple leadership positions and influence in quality, standards, and practice using evidence-based practice principles. The portfolio page displays nine projects that highlight this expertise.
There are nine projects to exemplify Joy’s leadership capabilities. In project 1, a personal and professional accounting of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) allow for an honest understanding of where Joy can excel and where the next steps in professional development are possible. Project 2 shows a Venn diagram with an understanding that different accreditation organizations each have their own strengths. Depending on which accreditation organization is used at a specific academic institution, Joy can adapt to any of the guidelines knowing that that the common feature is continuous quality improvement. The third project displays a code of ethics which is a foundation to guide all leadership activities. Project 4 shows a faculty learning needs assessment and this defines the gap in knowledge of a group. This naturally leads to project 5 to build a faculty professional development learning activity and this helps guide educational leaders to plan for next steps in accreditation. It is imperative to establish a communication plan with executive leadership through summaries, and this is seen in project 6. A grant proposal process is a described as a summary overview and is described in project 7. Communication of changes and development of programs for improvement are found in projects 8 and 9 which show a sample newsletter for faculty and an email announcement describing a timeline for development of structural improvements. Together these portfolio projects exhibit a range of skills, and capabilities that Joy can share with any healthcare organization or academic nursing program.
Joy McIlvaine can be a resource to future employers or as a consultant to provide insight on next steps for an academic nursing faculty professional development program. She is at a point in her professional development where she is available to healthcare organizations and academic medical centers to provide her expertise.
